Wonderful essay, Phillip. The confidence behind your diagnosis is a much needed bulwark against the never-ending justification of technology in education.
Excellent read touching on devastating truth about our time and its impatient reliance on technology for knowledge while disregarding true sources of wisdom.
Loved the article. I will say, Dolitsky's advice at the end seemed to be aimed more at students, as he pleas them to abandon digital distractions and rash reactions. It may be worth ideating ways in which institutions can introspect and discover ways in which they are perpetuating this crises.
Many assignments in modern education request of the student to present his or her own opinion on a subject, usually regardless of the experts and historical sources.
I'm reminded of the scene in the movie "Mona Lisa's Smile" (2003) where a top student is given a B simply due to the assignment asking for her personal opinion and her omission of that very opinion.
While there is much to be done if one is a student, let us not absolve from responsibility those that hold the reigns.
