Year-filled Eyes

A Poem on Growing Old

A misty veil over layered green

Descends upon this splendid scene

Of which I’ve often sat and viewed

With young and restless heart infused

With all that bears on men in life;

The joy, the pain, the love, and strife

Must surely come to haunt our minds

As we grow old and years unwind.

I’ve reckoned such from times I’d seen

My father’s mother, who it seems,

Was lost in thoughts and fading folds

Of long-past days, her days of old.

By fireside we’d sip on tea,

We’d sip away on memories.

Ghosts appeared in year-filled eyes,

Her storied-lips would breathe in sighs.

Then, one final sigh was wrought

And year-filled eyes no longer sought

To shed a tear for long-gone ways

Such tears are mine for future days.
